KAT’S CANVAS

“Sophie” is an homage to my man’s best friend, my childhood dog Sophie. Through the use of 3D animation, her irrational fear of anything cubical is brought to life in a short story detailing her story. It’s set in a stylized, cheerfully colored environment contrasted by the spooky and aggressive storm she gets caught in at the climax. The simpler shapes were intentional to allow for the experimentation of squash and stretch styles of animation to be used. Since rigging has and will always be something I want to continuously work on, the main goal is to learn just where my boundaries lie with the skill and what I can improve on. Therefore, the film focuses on expressive character animation using blend shapes to allow for this film to tell its story without the use of dialogue. It is both an experiment to test the bounds of my animation proficiency, but also my understanding of the core principles of animation and visual storytelling.
